Peter Frost

Peter Frost

Early Life

Peter came to live in the New Forest when he was 11 years old.  He spent those early years wandering the New Forest and fishing in the forest streams and exploring its woods and heaths.

Over the years I have built up a knowledge of the New Forest; 9 years as a Verderer. 8 years as a member of the New Forest National Park Authority.

17 years as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the New Forest Association which is the leading conservation charity that works to protect the New Forest. I am at present one of their Vice Presidents.

Peter has recently retired from running a small printing business which he started in 1988.

Artistic Style

Peter starts all his paintings plein-air but he also works up larger paintings in his studio from these oil sketches and photographs.

Process

Peter’s work always begins with observation. He spends hours walking the Forest, sketching, and noting subtle changes in light and texture. His approach is grounded in authenticity – painting what he sees and feels, guided by years of study and deep respect for the environment.

Connection to the Forest

As both an artist and a conservationist, Peter has dedicated much of his life to understanding and protecting the New Forest. His experience as a Verderer of the Forest and his long-standing involvement in conservation give him unique insight into the ecology and history that shape his art. This deep knowledge enriches every painting he creates.

Reflection

Through his work, Peter hopes viewers sense the timeless character of the New Forest — its tranquillity, strength, and fragile beauty. Each painting is an invitation to pause, look closer, and share in the wonder of this extraordinary landscape.

Peter has a deep knowledge of the subject which helps him to paint the New Forest with a passionate commitment, that he hopes conveys a love of the subject.

Exhibiting

Peter’s plein-air paintings are regularly shown as part of the New Forest Painters exhibitions, where he shares his deep connection to the landscape with visitors. His work continues to be admired by those who appreciate authentic depictions of the Forest and the stories held within its ancient paths, heaths, and woodlands.
