Alan Langford

Alan Langford S.E.A.

Alan Langford is a freelance artist and illustrator who specialises in equestrian subject matter.  As a native of the New Forest, he is familiar with its extensive landscapes of open heath and ancient woodland that are frequently depicted in his paintings.

Since childhood close contact with the local Romani community, ( who’s relationship with the Forest can be retraced for centuries ), has left an empathic influence on his art.  Paintings of the Romani Welgora’s (horse fairs,) and Atchin Tans (temporary camps) often feature in his paintings.

A love of horses and riding, and the struggle to depict action in a convincing, predominantly aesthetic way, is the foremost objective in his paintings.

Education

After an early footloose career wandering from one unskilled job or another in Australia and the UK he finally embarked on a serious course of part time study at SOUTHAMPTON COLLEGE OF ART.

It was there that his natural abilities as an illustrator were encouraged by his tutor Ivy Richards.

After receiving an A grade A level he qualified to study as a full time student on the colleges Foundation Course. An opportunity he had to let pass since his absence from the UK while wanderings in Australia exempted from any grant entitlement.

Career

However after attending numerous unsuccessful interviews, he finally found work as a full time illustrator with a company in Alresford Hampshire illustrating pen and ink topographical line drawings that were transferred onto copper laminated plaques. He worked for Etchmasters for almost three years before leaving to work freelance for a Fleet Street Artists Agency.

Current Work

Since then he has illustrated Comics, encyclopaedias, history books, classical novels etc. and creates watercolour and oil paintings of the New Forest and the Romani community.

A fuller account of his life can be read in his very condensed autobiography WELGORA which is published by LITTLE KNOLL PRESS.
