Barry Peckham

In Memory of Barry Peckham (1948–2024)

New Forest Painter • Mentor • Friend • Master Painter

Barry Peckham was a founding and much-loved member of the New Forest Painters, and his passing leaves an irreplaceable space in the artistic community he helped to shape. Known for his exceptional skill, warm humour and unwavering dedication to painting, Barry was both a prolific artist and an inspiring presence to many who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Life Shaped by Art and Adventure

Barry approached life with curiosity, energy and a readiness to explore. He organised countless walking and painting trips across the UK, from Dartmoor and Cornwall to the Lake District, Snowdonia and the Yorkshire Moors. These adventures were as much about friendship as they were about art, strengthening bonds that lasted for decades. His enthusiasm often led the group into landscapes they might otherwise have admired from afar, and his fearless mountain scrambling became legendary among friends.

A Painter of Remarkable Skill

Painting was Barry’s full-time occupation and lifelong passion. Whether working outdoors in changing weather or indoors in his studio, he approached each piece with quiet confidence and focus. His work captured landscapes with freshness, clarity and a deep sense of place. He painted the New Forest with exceptional sensitivity, ponies grazing, shifting light over heathland, the quiet rhythm of woodland life. Experienced, disciplined and endlessly productive, Barry created hundreds of paintings cherished by collectors locally and across the country.

A Supportive Mentor and Generous Friend

Barry had a unique ability to guide other artists without ever overwhelming them. His advice was always gentle, thoughtful and offered with characteristic humour:
“I can’t tell you too much, you might get better than me!”
He encouraged many painters to take their first steps outdoors, fostering confidence and passion through example. For several New Forest Painters, Barry was the person who first said, “Come along, give it a try.”

A Founding Force in the New Forest Painters

For more than 25 years, Barry was at the heart of the group’s annual exhibitions. His commitment, organisation and vision helped shape the events that so many visitors look forward to each year. He also exhibited for many years at the New Forest Show, where his box of small unframed watercolours became a favourite starting point for new collectors. Barry was a respected member of national art societies, including the Society of Equestrian Artists, and made lasting friendships throughout the wider art world.

A Legacy That Lives On

Beyond the stories, laughter and practical jokes, including digitally altering photographs to swap bald heads and flowing hair — Barry leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity and exceptional artistry. His spirit remains in the woods, heaths and coastlines he painted so beautifully, and in the many artists he encouraged along the way.

The New Forest Painters are deeply grateful for everything Barry contributed to the group and to the artistic life of the Forest. His work, his humour and his friendship will be remembered with great affection.
