Hilary Tratt

Early Life

Hilary grew up in Devon and studied at Dartington College of Arts and The Welsh College of Music and Drama. I moved to the New Forest in 1988 and since then, the Forest’s rich wildlife, landscapes, and vegetation have provided me with an endless source of inspiration for my art.

“I love exploring the wilder parts of Britain and the chance encounters with the animals and plants that live there. I try to capture the excitement of those meetings in my paintings. I’m particularly interested in birds and the intricate patterns of leaves and flowers.”

Artistic Style

Working mainly in pen and ink, watercolour, oil and acrylic, I combine detailed observation with a sensitivity to colour and movement. My paintings often reflect the harmony and delicacy of the natural world, celebrating both the energy and stillness found in wildlife.

Process

I aim to convey not only the likeness of a subject but also the fleeting sense of wonder that comes with seeing it in its natural habitat. Each brushstroke is a quiet reflection of my connection to the landscape and its inhabitants.

Reflection

Through my art, I hope to share the quiet joy of observing wildlife and the delicate beauty of the natural world. I want viewers to feel a sense of peace and appreciation for the intricate patterns and life that surround us every day.
